This subject lays the groundwork for understanding the physiological principles, practical skills, and scientific insights essential for exercise prescription. Students will gain the decision-making and problem-solving skills to create and execute person-centred, evidence-based exercise programs that are both safe and effective to promote self-management of physical activity and preventive healthcare. Exercise prescription practice will be applied to healthy, low-risk population, culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds or individuals with common medical conditions. The subject also delves into the planning and logistics of exercise programming, including how to appropriately adjust or discontinue exercise based on risk factors identified during pre-screening.

Demonstrate understanding to manage adverse signs and symptoms that may arise during exercise, identify common chronic disease risk factors and implement exercise to reduce identified chronic disease risk factors

Identify exercises that are contraindicated by considering growth, development, pregnancy, disability, aging and chronic disease to inform evidence-based exercise prescription

Interpret and communicate data obtained from evidence-based assessments to guide future practice, considering the impact of common medications and medical interventions on both acute and chronic responses to exercise

Select appropriate exercises and equipment and apply behavioural strategies to optimise goal-oriented person-centred care to meet the needs and preferences of clients and communicate expected outcomes

Integrate knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology and apply various methods to prescribe, monitor, manage, progress and regress exercise by considering principles of growth, development, pregnancy, disability, aging and chronic disease to improve health and well-being
