This subject follows on from BM4101 to advance the students skills as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. Covering in detail the microscopic pathology and laboratory skills required for characterisation of cells and the diagnosis of both malignant and non malignant leucocyte disorders and blood borne parasitic infections. Endocrine function and analysis of disorders, protein and immunoglobulin determination, therapeutic drug monitoring and tumour markers, iron and lipid disorders. This is followed by a six-week clinical rotation in an accredited medical laboratory assessed by a clinical supervisor and guided program which includes clinical case presentations and competency assessment. This subject with BM4101 completes the professional requirement for a graduate medical laboratory scientist.

Evaluate results of haematological analysis (including morphology, cell counts, molecular and flow cytometry) and link these to the pathophysiology and diagnosis of leukocyte disorders and red cell parasitic disorders

Exercise judgment to interpret and comment on data collected during practical/clinical sessions and the interpretation of clinical case studies

Display high level proficiency in disciplines of laboratory medicine
