This subject introduces the student to the integrated pathology laboratory disciplines of haematology, chemical pathology and transfusion medicine. The structure and function of haemopoietic cells is reviewed, followed by a detailed study of red cell pathology and haemostasis. Both manual and automated methods of quantitation are taught. The student will be led through fundamental issues of cell counting and morphology, spectrophotometric analysis and quality assurance. Organ system function will be reviewed with a focus on the methods required for the determination of disorders and the clinical interpretation of results. The subject develops skills and knowledge required for proficiency in the safe supply of human blood products. A review of antibody antigen interaction will lead into the practical application of antibody screening, identification and compatibility testing. Quality assurance and safety of the blood supply will be covered. The students are led through problem solving incompatible reactions, situations they will likely encounter in a working laboratory. advanced techniques and current developments in stem cell transplantation and cord blood banking will also be discussed. Case based tutorial sessions facilitate the development of integrated clinical interpretation skills. This subject provides the professional requirements for a graduate medical laboratory scientist and an opportunity for placement in a pathology laboratory.

Describe the blood film features, create a descriptive criterion for the identification and differentiation of all haemopoietic cells and link these to pathophysiology and diagnosis
