EA5046 - Geochemistry of the Earth and Environment

EA3800 introduces students to geochemistry and the utility of trace elements and isotopes in constraining the development and evolution of the Earth and environment around us. Topics include a wide array of applications including: elemental distribution in the cosmos; the formation of Earth; the fundamentals of radiometric dating; aqueous geochemistry and chemical weathering; using isotope ratios as tracers of natural and anthropogenic processes; reconstructing the chemistry of the ancient and modern oceans;  exploration geochemistry through isotope vectoring; and the formation of the continental crust and its impact on biosphere evolution.

Students enrolling in this subject should have an understanding of the fundamentals of chemistry and the major concepts in Earth Sciences  covered in first year. EA1110 and CH1020, or equivalent experience, are highly recommended.
