The purpose of this subject is to introduce students to research methods and data analysis techniques within psychology. Students will first learn about the scientific method and research approaches used by psychology researchers. They will then learn how to design research projects, focussing on how to generate research ideas, formulate testable hypotheses, develop ethical research protocols, and appropriately recruit samples of participants. Additionally, students will learn how to analyse research data, using basic descriptive and inferential statistics, using statistical software. The emphasis will be on understanding statistics at a conceptual level and knowing how to apply them appropriately, rather than on their mathematical calculations. Finally, students will be shown how to present research findings appropriately.
