BZ3235 - Biological Invasions

Invasive alien species have become an integral component of habitats worldwide. Species have shifted their distributions for as long as life exists but never at the speed, or to the extent, of the past century. Invasives challenge not only the way we obtain food and manage our land, but also the way we understand the ecology and evolution of natural systems. We will review key aspects of invasive ecology and management through direct and participatory discussions and practicals held each week. We will learn to identify invasive species, and to assess the factors involved in their disproportionate success. We will review how invasives have challenged long held ecological theories, but also how they provide with new insights that might be useful to understand how native species could respond to climate change.

Summarize the scientific and practical considerations necessary in the design of management programs for invasive species

Demonstrate understanding of the process of biological invasions and factors affecting the process at each stage

Demonstrate understanding of the diversity of life histories, habitats, and biology among plants and animals and how they influence species invasions

Identify elements of good experimental design and hypothesis testing
