Bioinformatics is a rapidly growing and increasingly integral component of the modern life sciences. In this subject students will gain foundational skills in the utilisation of genomic and transcriptomic data to build and annotate genomes, to leverage online databases for the analysis of gene and protein structure, and for problem-solving through the integration of these skills with their knowledge of biological models. Students will learn to operate within a Unix environment to plan, execute and debug bioinformatic workflows, giving them the background necessary to take on bioinformatic tasks within their own future careers. The learning plan for this subject will involve lectures, tutorials and self-directed study with practical skills heavily prioritised. BM2331 Bioinformatics I: Decoding DNA is a prerequisite for BM3331 - Bioinformatics II: Mastering high throughput sequencing data.
