Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:
1.
Employ critical thinking and the best available evidence in making decisions that guide safe, quality nursing practice within person-centred, evidence-based and cultural safety frameworks.
2.
Establish and maintain effective therapeutic and professional relationships and advocate for others in a context of healthcare and based on mutual trust, respect and collegial partnerships.
3.
Critically appraise own nursing practice to ensure they are safe, capable practitioners, who conduct ongoing self-management and respond to concerns about other health professionals’ capability for practice.
4.
Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for their professional development and contribute to the development of others, including the provision of information and education that enable people to make decisions and take action in relation to their health.
5.
Conduct comprehensive and systematic assessments, including the analysis of information, data and outcomes as the basis for practice.
6.
Collaboratively plan, administer, document and effectively communicate quality nursing practice based on the appraisal of comprehensive, relevant information and evidence.
7.
Administer, or as appropriate delegate, quality and ethical goal-directed care based on synthesis of comprehensive and systematic assessment data, and the best available evidence, to achieve planned and agreed outcomes.
8.
Critically evaluate practice based on agreed priorities, goals, plans and outcomes and revise practice accordingly.
9.
Articulate the centrality of the relationship of women to the practice of midwifery, that is inclusive of the diverse social, cultural and spiritual values and beliefs unique to each individual, and that upholds her right to autonomy.
10.
Retrieve, critically evaluate and apply evidence in support of succinct, sequential and appropriate midwifery practice.
11.
Practise responsibly and with accountability, based on knowledge of the Australian health care system and in accordance with relevant policies, legislation, ethical, cultural safety and regulatory frameworks with particular emphasis on their role as advocate for women and their babies and the impact of power relationships on midwifery care.
12.
Translate, interpret and extrapolate knowledge of midwifery practice to influence safe and effective collaborative woman-centred health outcomes at all levels.
13.
Apply cognitive, technical and creative skills within a clearly defined and accepted scope of midwifery practice, ensuring referral as appropriate.
14.
Demonstrate comprehensive clinical reasoning, analysis and synthesis of therapeutic interventions, informed by physiological and pathophysiology principles, in a variety of contexts.
15.
Communicate effectively with women, their families, communities and members of the health care system to provide holistic woman-centred care in a partnership model.
16.
Employ strategies of critical analysis, evaluation and reflection as a framework for practice and continuing professional development of the self, others and the discipline of midwifery.
17.
Practise midwifery using a primary health care philosophy, addressing barriers to equity and access to health care facing disadvantaged women, families and communities with particular reference to the unique needs of those in tropical, rural, remote and/or Indigenous Australian contexts.

Credit
Students may apply for a credit transfer for previous tertiary study or informal and non-formal learning in accordance with the Credit Transfer Procedure.
Credit Expiry & Other Restrictions
Credit gained for any subject shall be cancelled 11 years after the date of the examination upon which the credit is based if, by then, the student has not completed the course of study prescribed for the degree.

All other applicants may receive up to 30 credit points.
Students applying for credit for previous study completed in a Diploma of Nursing must also provide evidence of registration as an Enrolled Nurse (Division 2) with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Up to 24 credit points may be awarded for this qualification.
Maximum Credit Allowed & Currency
48 credit points - Credit will be granted only for studies completed in the 5 years prior to the commencement of this course.
